Virginia Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations
We care about your business needs and make sure that we are in compliance with Federal and State of Virginia regulations. Virginia’s medical waste disposal regulations are managed by the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Refer to these resources for definitions in Chapter 120 and medical waste regulations of the Administrative Code.
Virginia DEQ defines Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) as:
- Cultures and stocks of microorganisms and biologicals
- Human blood and human body fluids
- Tissues and other anatomical wastes
- Sharps
- Animal carcasses, body parts, bedding, and related wastes
- Residue from cleanup of RMW spill
- Solid waste contaminated by or mixed with RMW
- Solid waste that is suspect by the Medical Professional in Charge at a facility to produce an infectious disease
Regulated Medical Waste stored for more than 7 days must be refrigerated between 35°- 45°F
All Regulated Medical Waste management facilities are required to keep a spill containment and clean-up kit
All Regulated Medical Waste management facilities are required to:
- Maintain manifests for 3 years
- Keep records on any spill of more than:
- 32 gallons of RMW
- 1 quart of liquid RMW
- Maintain notebook with policies and procedures for dealing with RMW
- Keep a log of all special training in RMW management.
- Maintain list of members of any committee for infection control, including addresses, phone numbers, and periods of membership
