Medical waste, also known as Regulated Medical Waste (RMW), which may include Other Potentially Infectious Materials (OPIM) definitions may vary by state. Typically, RMW refers to waste that is saturated with or include liquid or semi-liquid blood and some body fluids, contaminated sharps and pathological wastes. In dental practices, RMW may include sharps for disposal, contaminated gauze, dental bibs, or personal protective equipment that is saturated with blood or OPIM.
While RMW is defined by federal agencies, such as OSHA and the DOT, it is important to also consider local and state requirements, which may be more stringent. Visit our locations page to learn more about your state medical waste regulations.
To support compliance with federal regulations, regulated medical waste should not be disposed of in the regular municipal solid waste. Improper management of discarded needles and other sharps can pose a health risk to the public and waste workers.
